Use the Web to Check IRS Refund Status and Give Yourself Peace of Mind

If you used the traditional paper based forms that you have sent through the mail then you will need to wait three to four weeks before the tool can give you results. If, on the other hand, you took advantage of the easy electronic filing method for your federal taxes then you will be able to check IRS refund status within seventy two hours being notified by the IRS that they have received your return. For the tool to give you results, you will also need to have the information from your return handy. That means that you will need your Social Security number, the status which you have filed under (such as Single, Head of Household, Married Filing Joint Return, etc) and finally, the exact amount to be refunded as shown on your tax return. By inputting this information into the tool on the website, you will be given a response. Either they will inform you that your return is currently being processed or the date that your refund will be direct deposited if you have used e-filing. If you have gone through the mail in method then you may be informed that your return is being processed, that you must correct your address because your refund check could not be delivered or, optimally, the mailing date of your refund check.
