For taxpayers who have a child or children living with them for more than 6 months out of the tax-year, the IRS has financially beneficial Child Tax credits that they can take. These credits are in addition to the Earned Income Tax Credit that is also given out for taxpayers who are caring for children for longer than 6 months out of the tax year. Many of the conditions found for the EITC credits are the same used for the Child Tax credits. The children that qualify a taxpayer for the Child Tax credits do not need to be the birth-children of the taxpayer. Nephews, nieces, younger brothers or sisters, adopted children, court ordered custody arrangements, Foster Care program children, grandchildren, step-children, and others are allowed to have taxpayers claim them for their Child Tax credits. It is just very important that the child or children live in your home for over six months. The IRS Child Tax credits apply to people who are U.S. citizens, legal U.S. residents, U.S. nationals, and to those working in the United States legally. All children must be registered with the Social Security administration, and proof of registration is required before the taxpayer is allowed to claim the Child Tax credits on their income tax forms. All children involved must all be under the age of 17 during the tax year claimed. If the child or children being claimed for the Child Tax credits supplied more than one-half of their support during the tax year, they do not qualify for these credits that can allow up to $1,000 dollars for each child claimed. The money is deducted from any income taxes that you owe for the year, and the remainder is not always refunded. However, there is an Additional Child Tax credits form to fill-out for further refunds. Taxpayers who have larger incomes receive smaller amounts of Child Tax credits. The income levels for full credits are below $75,000 for single people, below $55,000 for married filing separately, and below $110,000 for married filing jointly status taxpayers. An easy way to claim the EITC credit, the Child Tax credits, and the Additional Child Tax credits is through the use of an online tax preparation site.
